Designed by the famed SoCal Googie architect Wayne McAllister, Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank opened in 1949 and remains the oldest Bob’s in the country. The diner on Riverside is an institution—and it’s only fitting that it serves a classic dessert, that frankly, was the best $4.29 we’d spent in a long, long time.
The Decadent Hot Fudge Cake is simple: Vanilla ice cream is sandwiched between two layers of devil’s food cake, topped with rich, hot fudge and a dollop of whipped topping and a cherry. There’s nothing fancy about this dessert; no infusions, reductions or a ganache in sight. Just cake and ice cream. And it’s perfect.
The proof is in the picture, above, and that first bite. Bob’s is only 20 minutes from the SCV on a good traffic day, so the next time you have $5 burning a hole in your pocket and can spare a few bajillion calories, take a seat at the counter and enjoy.
